AZWAR KAILI: False Witness and Victim of the Talangsari Case of 1989

The 1989 Talangsari Case: Azwar Kaili Regularly Opposes the Indonesian Government

Azwar Kaili was born in Pariaman, West Sumatra, in 1942. He often appears whenever KONTRAS (The Commission for Missing Persons and the Victims of Violence) exploits the Talangsari Case of 1989.

From his youth, he has been opposed to the government of the Republic of Indonesia.

Despite not graduating junior high school, the young Azwar Kaili joined the Student Troop Force of the PRRI (Revolutionary Government of the Republic of Indonesia), which was headquartered in Padang, West Sumatra.

The PRRI was declared on February 15, 1958, in Padang, West Sumatra, under the leadership of Lieutenant Colonel Ahmad Husein. The PRRI was a revolutionary movement that wanted to form a new country. However, this insurgent movement was stopped by the government of the Republic of Indonesia.

In 1959, Azwar Kaili moved to Tanjung Karang and became a sales agent for Gentong Cigarettes.

After living in Tanjung Karang for seven years, in 1966, Azwar Kaili returned to Pariaman, West Sumatra, to get married.

A year after that, in 1967, Azwar Kaili returned to Tanjung Karang. Because his cigarette business went bankrupt, he opened a Padang food stall. This business also failed. He then decided to become a traveling fabric salesman.

After getting tired of that business enterprise, in 1969 Azwar and other newcomers cleared some land for a residential area, which today is known as Sidorejo Village, close to the Mount Balak Protected Forest.

In Sidorejo Village, Azwar sold medicines and worked as an unofficial medic.

In 1989, when the mayhem had occurred in Talangsari, Azwar was detained for three months, this was because the public had reported that he was a part of the Warsidi group. Based on strong evidence, the authorities took Azwar into custody.

One strong piece of evidence of Azwar’s involvement was that he regularly gave free health education to members of Warsidi’s group at Zamzuri’s house.

Zamzuri was the figure who aided and abetted Abdullah, when activists of Abdullah Sungkar’s Islamic usroh movement in East Java fled to Lampung, to evade the authorities.

Azwar Kaili and his three sons, Iwan, Haris and Ujang alias Edi Arsadad, and his adopted son Warsito, actively participated in the religious study group led by Abdullah.

Azwar Kaili’s anti-government attitude strengthened in line with the growth of the Warsidi group, a group which intended to establish an Islamic state and break away from the Republic of Indonesia.

In fact, his treasonous behavior towards his own country and people was again on display when he latched on to the exploits of KONTRAS, which was working to personally benefit from the Talangsari Case of 1989 on the pretense of educating for human rights.

Sukardi, one of the planners and perpetrators of the Talangsari Case of 1989, who had once joined KONTRAS, said that when he was in KONTRAS he was indoctrinated to always oppose the government and the National Military.
