EDI ARSADAD alias UJANG: Exploiting the Talangsari Case of 1989

Who is Edi Arsadad?

He often goes by the nickname Ujang, and is one of Azwar Kaili’s sons. On several occasions, this father and son have claimed to be victims of the Talangsari Incident of 1989.

Ujang was born in Sidorejo, East Lampung, on October 18, 1977. This graduate of the Sidorejo Education Foundation (YPS) High School of Sidorejo, East Lampung, lives in the Rejo Makmur Hamlet of Sidorejo Village, in the Sekampung Udik District of East Lampung.

Azwar Kaili’s other two children are Iwan and Haris. Azwar Kaili, who was born in Pariaman, West Sumatra in 1942, also has an adopted son named Warsito.

Before the Talangsari Incident of 1989 took place, Azwar Kaili and his three sons, namely Ujang, Iwan and Haris, and his adopted son Warsito, were active in the religious study group led by Abdullah.

Abdullah alias Dullah is an activist of the Islamic usroh movement of Abdullah Sungkar in Central Java, a figure who fled from the authorities to Lampung, facilitated by Zamzuri.

Despite being a teenager at the time, Warsito, Azwar’s adopted son, was trained by Abdullah as a future Jihadist. Warsito and some of his peers became militants as a result of Abdullah’s teachings, and were later involved in the Talangsari case of 1989.

Haris and Ujang, who were also educated by Abdullah, went on to become criminals. The two were arrested by the police for fencing stolen motorcycles in Lampung. Ujang currently works for KONTRAS (The Commission for Missing Persons and the Victims of Violence).

One of Ujang’s activities is to work with a group of people he claims are victims and family members of victims from the Talangsari Incident of 1989. Ironically, these people are not recognized as victims or the families of victims by the people of Talangsari.

In truth, no one from the original Talangsari III community were involved in the Talangsari Case of 1989, whether as perpetrators or victims.

Ujang’s exploits are more motivated by his criminal intent to raise money for personal profit, not on feelings of compassion. He may have inherited this characteristic from his father, Azwar Kaili.

On the online media, Ujang is active as head of the East Lampung Bureau of the newslampungterkini.com website.
